On Tuesday Reese had to work most of the morning, so we decided we would walk/run up San Cristobal Hill in the afternoon. On our way, we stopped by a place called Natural Salads for lunch.
Look how massive this salad was! And it was only about $5 USD. I was only able to eat about 1/4 of it.
The bowl of salad in comparison to my face. It was really big, but still really yummy!
Reese tried this weird orange soda. It tasted similar to South African cream soda, just the orange version. If that makes any sense!
And he had a chicken wrap for lunch!
It was about a 2 mile walk from our hotel to the base of the hill. We walked through a residential neighbourhood which was cool because we had yet to see what the houses here in Santiago look like. Of course, they are really green with lots of big tree's and plants. Pretty much all of the houses have fences or walls. Before we came to Santiago I looked up crime, etc and it seemed like there was just a lot of petty stealing. Along with the vandalism of course... And this is a wealthy area. So I am just assuming thats the reason for the extra security.
Love the beautiful colours!!!
Posing by my favourite lamp posts! They lined both sides of the street.
I tried to trick Reese into looking for a picture... It didn't work so well!
More pictures of some of the houses:
Reese and I decided this was our favourite house! With some work it could be quite stunning.
It would have to be major work- considering the gaping hole in the wall next to the balcony. But we loved the style!
And we finally made it to the base!
The start of our climb:
Scenery from the way up:
On the top of the hill there was an outside service area for mass. Turns out, Wednesday is a big holy holiday day here in Chile where they celebrate the Virgin Mary. So we got to see the set-up for Wednesday's big holiday.
Behind each of the flower beds was benches.
The large crucifix next to the open service area.
And the statue we walked up 3.5 miles to see, the Virgin Mary. You can see her from the city, so I expected her to be a lot bigger. Not so much... But it was still worth it!
The nativity scene set-up for Wednesday's holiday. We think they were all wooden statues...
Baby Jesus was missing... chances are he probably would have gotten stolen if they left him there overnight.
More of the nativity, stage, and benches:
Reese doing his best Mary pose:
The whole set-up. As we walked up the stairs I noticed a TON of bee's buzzing around. It has to be because of all the flowers... I would not like to be sitting there swatting bee's for an hour.
Another picture of the crucifix:
Signs telling people where the confessionals are were all over the place!
Close up of Mary and more views of the city:
Underneath the statue was a little room. The door was locked, but there was just an alter of sorts inside with murals on the wall.
And of course, we paid our dues!
I didn't realize just how big Santiago was till we stood on top of the hill. Unfortunately, you can't walk around the top... You are just stuck on one side. So no shot of the Andes. And there was quite a bit of smog in the air, so you can't see the mountains in the distance.
Lots of prayers, and so much wax!!!
We followed the confessional signs to find they pointed to a little church! There was also an icecream shop on top of the hill. I can't say I am surprised. We passed about 6 of them on our way up!
Self-timer picture:
There were about 6 stray dogs on top of the hill and one of them followed us all the way down. I was annoyed. You could see the bugs on him and his shedding hair. Gross. Reese named him Marcos and asked if we could bring him back tto the hotel. Uh, no thanks. And the most interesting thing we saw on our way back down was a man with a belly button ring. I would have gotten a picture, but that probably wouldn't have been appropriate.
And to entertain us on part of the walk back to the hotel, this handsome man. Reese called it a "skullit".
All in all we walked close to 12 miles straight on Tuesday. Needless to say Reese and I were absolutely exhasted. We came back to the hotel, showered, and then ate at a pizzaria for dinner. It was straight back to the hotel after that to relax until bedtime!
