When I first got pregnant, I thought maternity clothes were dumb and a waste of money. I thought that with today's fashions, I could just buy the bigger boho shirts and maxi dresses and get away with that. And thats what I did. I bought 2 shirts and a pair of shorts thinking that they would make me feel better and work. Wrong! Maternity clothes are the best invention ever and I wouldn't wait to get them. I got my first bunch at 20 weeks and I wish I would have gotten them sooner. Nobody tells you how great and comfortable maternity clothes are. The fabrics are softer and they're made to fit a pregnant body, a.k.a to make you look pregnant and not like a tent! I wish I could wear the maternity bottoms all the time. Have you seen the waist bands on those things? Genius!
Anyways, so far, my favourite maternity store has been Gap. I haven't even stepped foot in a Motherhood Maternity or any of those pregnant only stores. Gap is affordable and I found that those other stores are just so overpriced. Especially for clothes you're only going to wear for 5-6 months every few years. Gap has the cutest stuff and if you buy just a few key items, you can wear them over and over again and not feel like your closest consists of 8 coat hangers, even though it does. One of my absolute favourite purchases has been this blue dress:
I've been wearing it since I was 20 weeks, at this was taken at 32 weeks. So it definitely has the growing room! It's also so soft, can be dressed up or down, and is just a comfortable dress to be in. I'll definitely be wearing this dress even after the baby. I got it from Gap online.
Another dress that I love from Gap is this orange wrap dress:
I like this dress because of the material, colour, and fit. A wrap dress is always flattering and will fit whether I am 20 weeks pregnant or 40 weeks pregnant. This may also be a good dress for nursing... We'll have to see!
I also got a blue/gray maxi skirt from Gap that has proven to be extremely versatile.
It's really light weight, and I have been living in it lately with the heat.
I did get myself a pair of knee-length shorts and 4 solid coloured v-neck fitted maternity shirts. I have worn them almost every single day. They are great! Also purchased at Gap. And I did get 2 pairs of capris too. I got a demin pair and a coral pair. These were great in the beginning (really comfy and cute) and although they still fit great, it's just too hot to wear type of pants that go below my knee.
I also bought 2 shirts that are still big on me. I read a lot on maternity clothes and all the reviews were saying to have a few things to wear when you're right at the end and just nothing fits. So I got a nice white and pink flowy top for those last weeks!
Lastly, the dress I got for my baby shower is perfect! I had heard a lot about asos.com and that they had good maternity clothes for good prices. So I bought this dress (kids and husband not included):
I just love it! I actually hope its a dress I can wear not pregnant... we shall see! I bought my normal size when I'm not pregnant and it fit perfectly. If I needed to buy more maternity clothes, I would definitely get some more stuff from asos!
I think the key in maternity clothes is to buy them when you start to feel fat and self-conscious. It really makes you feel better once you get the clothes. Also, set a budget and stick to it! You don't need an entire new closet of maternity clothes. I don't even have to go look at mine to tell you what I have. I guess the only thing that would make you buy more is church clothes... Either that or you just re-wear/accessorize.
This worked for me (being summer):
1 pair of shorts
2 pairs of capris
1 maxi skirt
4 dresses
4 solid fitted shirts
2 flowy shirts
Wearing maternity clothes when pregnant definitely makes you feel 1000000 times better! It worked for me! :)
